During your complimentary consultation, Dr. Whitney will carefully evaluate your smile, discuss your goals, and help you determine the best treatment option for your lifestyle and needs.
When should my child see an orthodontist for the first time?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children receive their first orthodontic evaluation around age 7.
That doesn’t mean every child needs braces at age 7. In fact, many children simply benefit from observation as they grow.
Early evaluations allow Dr. Whitney to monitor jaw development, identify potential concerns before they become more severe, and determine the ideal timing for treatment if it’s needed later on.
At Stella Maris Orthodontics, we take a thoughtful, conservative approach to care. You’ll always receive honest guidance and recommendations centered around what’s truly best for your child.
Do I need a referral from my dentist to visit an orthodontist?
No referral is necessary. While many patients are referred by their family dentist, you’re welcome to schedule a complimentary consultation with us anytime on your own.
Is orthodontic treatment really necessary?
Orthodontic treatment can improve much more than just the appearance of your smile.
The alignment of your teeth and jaws affects how you bite, chew, clean your teeth, speak, breathe, and even sleep in some cases. Proper orthodontic treatment can improve oral health, function, confidence, and long-term stability.
That said, not everyone needs orthodontic treatment, and we’ll never recommend care that isn’t truly necessary.
At Stella Maris Orthodontics, every recommendation is thoughtfully personalized. Dr. Whitney takes time to evaluate the full picture before guiding you toward the right next step for your smile.
How often will I need braces or aligner appointments?
Your appointment schedule will depend on your personalized treatment plan, but our fully digital workflow helps make treatment more efficient and convenient for busy families. Our visits range from 4-12 week intervals depending on your plan!
With advanced digital planning and customized treatment systems, appointments are often spaced farther apart than traditional orthodontic visits.
We also offer same-day starts whenever possible, helping you begin treatment without unnecessary delays or multiple appointments.
Our goal is to make orthodontic care fit naturally into your life while still providing the close attention and personalized guidance you deserve.
Will my child need an orthodontic appliance?
Possibly! Orthodontic appliances like expanders, facemasks, and Class II correcting appliances are sometimes used to guide jaw growth, create space for incoming teeth, or help correct bite concerns like crossbites, overbites, or underbites.
Dr. Whitney will determine whether an appliance is recommended after a comprehensive orthodontic evaluation.
If treatment is needed, we’ll walk you through every step clearly and thoughtfully so you feel confident moving forward.
Can I start braces or aligners on my first visit?
Yes! In many cases, we can begin treatment during your complimentary consultation appointment.
If you choose traditional metal braces, we’re often able to place them the very same day.
If you choose a custom treatment option, like clear aligners or KLOwen custom braces, we can take your digital smile scan during your first visit and start your treatment with the process of designing your personalized treatment plan right away.
What is the cost of braces or clear aligners?
The cost of orthodontic treatment depends on your individual needs and treatment plan.
At Stella Maris Orthodontics, we believe exceptional orthodontic care should feel accessible and straightforward.
We offer customized payment plans with:
- 0% interest in-house financing
- Flexible monthly payments
- No credit checks for financing
- Insurance benefit assistance (we accept most PPOs)
- Monthly payments around $185
During your complimentary consultation, we’ll review your treatment options, explain your insurance benefits, and build a payment plan that feels comfortable for your family.
You’ll always receive transparent pricing with clear communication from the beginning.
Do I still need to visit my dentist during orthodontic treatment?
Yes! Regular dental cleanings and exams remain very important throughout orthodontic treatment.
Healthy teeth and gums are essential for achieving the best orthodontic results, so we encourage patients to continue seeing their general dentist every 6 months, or as recommended by their dentist.
We’re also happy to coordinate care with your dentist whenever needed.
How long will braces or clear aligner treatment take?
Every smile is different, so treatment length varies depending on your needs, goals, and treatment type.
Some patients may complete treatment in under a year, while others require longer comprehensive care.
During your consultation, Dr. Whitney will evaluate your smile and provide a personalized estimate for your treatment timeline.
Your cooperation throughout treatment, including wearing aligners as instructed and maintaining excellent oral hygiene, also plays an important role in keeping treatment on track.
What happens if I break a bracket or lose my aligner or retainer?
If you experience an orthodontic emergency, please call our office. If it’s during business hours, call our office phone at (936) 228-3055.
For after-hours emergencies, please call (936) 228-1968.
Whether it’s a loose bracket, poking braces wire, or lost aligner or retainer, our team will guide you on the next steps and help keep your treatment moving smoothly.
Our goal is always to make the process feel calm, supportive, and manageable, even when unexpected things happen.
Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?
Absolutely not! Orthodontic treatment is for all ages, and many adults choose to begin treatment later in life.
Whether your concerns are cosmetic, functional, or both, Dr. Whitney creates comprehensive treatment plans designed to achieve lasting, healthy, beautifully balanced smiles.
We offer modern orthodontic treatments for adults, including clear aligners and custom braces, designed to fit comfortably into adult lifestyles while delivering beautiful, lasting results.
